Daiya's First Day of Kindergarten

Erica

“E, you sleep?”

Hovering over my face, I knew my husband wasn’t going to budge until I answered him. This was his second time asking if I were awake in the last ten minutes, and my answer was still yes. I wanted to get my rest in before his son woke up within the next thirty minutes crying to be fed like clockwork, and before it was time to wake Daiya up for her first day of school. I was so nervous for my babies first day; I had stayed up most of the night stressing about it.

“I know you ain’t sleep,” he grumbled in my ear before sinking his teeth into my neck. Squirming a little from the instant shock, the comfort of his strong arm wrapping around my waist soothed whatever pain I was feeling.

“I’m awake now.”

“We have a kindergartner, E. Where did the time go?” Meechi sighed, and I knew my baby was stressing. He had been trying to avoid this day all week and now the time had come to face the music.

“We do. You ready for this?” I asked, and he pulled me closer. As if our bodies could mesh anymore. Meechi had always been affectionate, but ever since I got pregnant with Baby Meechi, and even after I had him, he can’t keep his hands off me.

“Nah, I’m not. But I know what can get me ready,” he whispered seductively, with his deep voice making my stomach churn. This is why my ass stayed knocked up now. He was hardly doing anything, and I was ready to hop on him.

Sliding his hand between my legs, he hardly copped him a feel before the ringing of his phone resounded throughout our bedroom. With his body now completely hovering over mine and my legs cocked back, I chuckled at the grunt he let out when the phone kept ringing.

“Fuck is this calling so early for anyway?” he hissed, leaning over me to grab his cell from the nightstand. “This nigga,” he huffed, placing the call on speaker.

“Aye, nigga. You awake? Shit, you gotta be if you answered the phone.” Sens' voice boomed throughout the room, and I shook my head. There could only be one reason he was calling.

“Do you see what time it is cus? Fuck you mean am I awake? Why are you up calling me?” Meechi voiced, trying to slide my panties off with one hand while holding the phone in the other. “Take em’ off,” he said in a hushed tone.

“It’s my baby girls first day of school. I know you ain’t think me and Neicey wasn’t making an appearance,” he chuckled before I heard Neicey begin to fuss at him.

“It’s too fucking earlier Sensay. Daiya is going to be good, trust me. You do not need to go up there. Let her parent’s handle that.”

Sen smacked his teeth as I waved Meechi’s hand away. Baby Meechi had just started crying, and his wails were only going to get louder on the monitor the longer I took to get him. The men may have Daiya spoiled, but my baby boy was spoiled rotten all thanks to me. I didn’t want it to be that way, but he looked so much like his daddy I couldn’t help it.

“Didn’t nobody ask you to chime in. You lucky your ass even getting to ride with me,” he replied making me laugh as I maneuvered my way from the bed and stood.

“What you doing? You can let him cry for a few minutes,” Meechi griped looking at me with the screw face. I cocked my head to the side.

“Few minutes? Let me find out you a quick pumper now.”

“Never. Have yo ass around here crippled for the rest of the week. It’s all good, wait until we get back.”

Sexily, he licked his lips and gave me a wink. Those thick, juicy, dark lips that belonged to me and only me, and I felt like the luckiest woman alive. Meechi knew he was the shit and nobody could tell him any different or boost his ego as I could.

“Aight. When E be walking around looking like Neicey, don’t say shit. She just had that little nigga,” Sen said before I heard him yell out, “Aye. Chill yo ass out. You done got heavy handed as fuck.”

“Don’t talk about me and my baby. I look like this because you can’t keep your dick to yourself,” Neicey spat, and I laughed. These two were a mess.

“This muthafucka belong to you. Fuck I’ma keep it to myself for?”

“Aight. I ain’t even trying to hear all this. We’ll be at the school in an hour, hour and a half,” Meechi spoke, and I walked out the bedroom.

While changing Baby Meechi before he got breast fed, Daiya walked in his room rubbing her eyes. Still dressed in her nightgown, my baby did not look excited at all to be going to school today.

“Good morning Mommy’s princess. You ready for your big day?”

“I don’t want to go,” she pouted, before walking over to me. Climbing in my lap, I balanced her on my right leg, with Meechi on the right.

“Why not? You were excited all this week.”

“You and Daddy are taking me?” she questioned with soft eyes the same smoky gray color as mine. Daiya was the perfect resemblance of Meechi and me, while baby Meechi looked everything like him.

“Mhm, and Neicey and Sen-”

“Senny is coming, too?”

With wide eyes, Daiya was waiting for the magic words to be spoken. She loved her some Sensay, and I’m sure this her reasoning for not wanting to go to school was because he wouldn’t be there. Assuringly I shook my head yes.

“Senny is coming, too. Daddy is on the phone with him now.

“But he won’t be if you don’t come brush your teeth little girl,” Meechi said standing by the door.

On cue, Daiya hopped from my lap and ran to him. Meechi swooped her up, and she couldn’t contain the smile on her face. “Hi, daddy.”

“Good morning, princess. You ready for today?” he asked beaming with pride trying to save face.

“Yes! I’m excited,” she exclaimed, making me shake my head with a grin. She was just oh so unexcited, but as soon as her daddy asks her and she heard Sens name, it’s another story.

“Well we can't have you showing up to school with boogers and snot in your nose, with crust on your face; can we?” he asked tickling her, and Daiya shook her head no while laughing.

“No! No!”

“Alright then. Let’s go get you cleaned up.”

“You want me to get her?” I asked.

Placing Daiya to her feet, she took off toward her room, and Meechi shook his head no. Pointing to his now wide awake twin, he chuckled. “Nah. I got her. You stole all my time last night doing her hair. And your son is awake.”

“My son?” I laughed. “And I’ll take the credit for all her hair. We both know your side of the family had nothing to do with that.”

“Aww. Don’t be a hater. You were practically a bald head until I started pulling on that shit from the back. You over there looking like Rapunzel now,” he joked and ducked out of the door before I could throw something at him.

Baby Meechi started making all kinds of noise, with his little face frowned up. “You trying to gang up on me, too? Don’t forget who feeds you, little boy,” I spoke and he went right back to sucking my boob. It was more so of a comfort thing for him, but I enjoyed it just as much.

After getting dressed and climbing into Meechi’s Bentley Truck, I had copped him for Father’s Day. He was still on cloud nine about his gift, and I was on cloud nine for him. He could stop driving mine now.

“Ma, you sure Senny is coming?” Daiya asked as we pulled out of the driveway. I looked over at Meechi, and he smirked with a shake of his head.

“Yes, baby. He’ll be there and he better act right,” I said, whispering the last part between Meechi and me. But, I knew that’d be like wishing upon a star.

And, I probably should have wished on a star. Holding Meechi in my arms, I tried hard to contain the laugh I so badly wanted to let out. Sen was going to win cousin of the year award if he hadn’t already.

“Did he smoke before ya’ll left the house?” I asked Neicey, who had a mug on her face. She was so not the friendly pregnant type.

“No, but he should have. His ass gone say since we gotta bring boxes of tissue, hand sanitizer and all that shit, they must need it for something. I don’t even know where he got those from,” she hissed, rubbing her belly. Going on five months, you could now see her belly bump, and it was the cutest sight ever. Especially because she had been through so much, I was more than ready to meet my niece or nephew.

“That’s all of ‘em,” Sen spoke when other kids not even in Daiya's class. “Aight Dai, now listen. We gone go in here and see who you sitting by cool?”

Daiya smiled and nodded her head. “Cool.”

“He left his gun, right?”

Neicey looked at me like I was crazy, but nodded her head. “Girl yes. I did not need this man to get locked up at this fancy ass school. We be all over the news and shit.”

I chuckled before we all began walking in the classroom. While I was holding it together, Meechi seemed to be losing his cool with every step that we took. The grip he had on my hand only got tighter the closer we got.

“She’s going to be fine, bae,” I assured, rubbing his back. He nodded his head but didn’t say anything.

Stepping into the room, we waited to find her desk, and when we did, I could have climbed underneath a rock. It was right by a little boy who had one of the freshest fades I had seen on a kindergartner.

“My man. I think you’re in the wrong seat,” Sen spoke holding on to the back of his chair.

“I’m sorry. What was that?” I’m assuming who was his mother asked.

“This your son?” she nodded her head. “He can’t sit next to my baby girl. I can already tell he’s going to be a distraction. Look at that chain around his neck.”

The little boy looked down at his chest and lifted his chain. “My PawPaw gave me this chain.”

“Mine gave me this bracelet,” Daiya spoke up, and Sen looked her way.

“Not right now Dai. This grown man business,” he said before facing the little boy. I mouthed an I’m sorry to his mother with a shake of my head.

“You like sharing?”

The little boy shrugged his shoulders. “Sometimes.”

“You got a cell phone?”

He shook his head no and looked at his mama. “My mama said I couldn't have one until I turn…”

“Thirteen,” she spoke. “Is there a reason why you're asking him all of these questions?”

“You’ll have to excuse him. This is his first time bringing his little cousin to school. He doesn’t have any home training,” I spoke, and she nodded her head in amusement.

“Oh. Okay.”

“Now Dai. He said he only shares sometimes, so you only share sometimes. Neither one of yall have phones so don’t be trying to scribble his house number down on a picture and bring it home, alright?”

Daiya’s face was frowned up, and the little boy was looking like he had done something wrong. “Oh. And keep your hands to yourself, little man. That’s the first rule they teach you in school, but I’ll teach you instead.”

“Alright,” Meechi spoke pulling Dai’s chair out for her to sit down. “Give Senny a hug so he can leave.” Wrapping her arms around his legs, Dai hugged him before turning on the heels of her feet to hug Neicey.

“See you later, boo. Have a good day okay?”

“Okay. Mommy, can I give my brother a hug?”

I nodded my head and leaned him forward. Kissing his cheek, she smiled before kissing mine and hugging me. “You be good okay? I’ll be here as soon as you get out to pick you up.”

She looked toward Sen and then toward her daddy, and I nodded my head. “Them too. We’ll be here.”

“Okay,” she sighed, seeming to get a little sad. I looked toward Meechi, and he huffed before helping her into her chair.

“You’re a big girl now, Princess. Big girls go to school and get an education. If you start crying, you gone make Daddy cry. You want me to cry?” Meechi asked her, and I damn near teared up myself. I knew he was going to cry in the car.

Daiya looked up at him and shook her head no. “No.”

“Well be a big girl, and when we come pick you up, we can go to any store you want. Deal?”

Her eyes lit up with excitement. “Any store?”

“Mhm. Just say the word, and we’re going.”

“Okay. I can be a big girl,” she agreed.

“Good. Now give me a hug, and have fun today okay? I want to hear all about your first day when you climb in the backseat later on.”

She threw her arms around his neck and Meechu hugged her like it was going to be his last time seeing her. After placing a kiss on her forehead, the teacher came over right in time to distract her and the little boy who had been struggling to let his mama slip away as well. Meechi stood there for a second, and I could only imagine what was going through his mind. When he blinked back tears, I grabbed his hand.

“Come on. She’s going to be fine.”

He gave her one last look before I turned and placed the hand on the small of my back to guide us out the door. Walking out of the building, I chuckled at Sen yawning and patting his pockets. I already knew what he was looking for.

“Man,” he dragged, “I don’t know what I’ma do if Shanice has a girl. My baby getting home schooled. That little nigga sitting next to her was fresh as hell and had the nerve to have on some cologne.”

“No, he did not,” Neicey laughed. “You seriously don’t have any home training. You better get your shit together before this baby gets here, and before we walk down the aisle.”

Sen waved her off. “Only thing that’s ever going to change about me is the amount of love I have for you once we do walk down that aisle and you deliver my child, and my zip code once we move into our new crib. Anything else… You can forget about it,” he joked, pulling her into a bear hug from behind.

I smiled at the two and Meechi wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “My baby isn’t a baby anymore,” he spoke, voice low like he was thinking of something.

“I know. That just means you’re getting old, old man,” I grinned while baby Meechi tried climbing out of my arms.

“Nah,” he said grabbing him, “That just means it’s time to get you pregnant again.”

I laughed out loud, and he looked back at me with a smirk. “You just see what happened back there?”

He nodded his head. “Yep, and it’s going to happen with him and how many ever else kids I put up in you.”

“Mhm. Let’s enjoy me not being pregnant for a while. I’m still in honey moon phase,” I said with a smile on my face. Had I not got on birth control a month before the wedding, there was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t be pregnant.

“Remember that honey moon phase shit when we get back to the crib. You owe down, baby,” he chuckled, smacking me on the ass.

While he placed Meechi in his car seat, I climbed in the passenger after he opened more door and was grinning. Unlike his big sister, Meechi wasn’t a cockblocker at all. If daddy said I owed down, then that’s just what it was.
